ReplyDeleteI really love this blog because it has many different links to different sources who also reviewed the movie, so we can get all these different povs and more information about the movie.
DeleteThis is quite a unique review, and I believe that anyone can see that there is a lot of information in this site. This is a good one Seth.
DeleteRosee had the same link. So I'll just repost my comment:
DeleteThe author of the site is trusted and therefore it is a dependable source. But the content of the articles are more about the plot, with some opinionated comments. There isn't much exploration of the technical aspects and it seems more like a review.
3/5
I like this link because there are so many different links with different interesting information
DeleteThis is a really interesting resource as it includes video essays and a ton of different stuff. It's a little bit cumbersome - not sure that it's easy to find something specific you'd be looking for (though it does have a search function). Some of the listed resources never seemed to come up - it seems like quite a huge site to try and maintain. It is evident you can find critical analysis here, though, as it included a link to David Bordwell's site (he co-wrote one of the book I use in class):

Film is all is lost
Luke Broyles
I couldn't decide between the two, but I think the first link could be better.
Delete( to the first one) Yo Luke! Great link there, this review is very specified and it's not just talking about the facts, but also the emotion and some personal feelings about this film.
DeleteMy "critical analysis or review" conclusion is that my first article is worse at a 6 than my second which I think is a 7 or maybe an 8.
DeleteI rate this 8/10. (The first one). To me it was almost like a commercial, just more intense, and descriptive about whats happening. It also made me curious to what happens, so I now want to watch this film.
DeleteIt was interesting to read two reviews on this film. The second one has mention of some cinematic technique - but it is evaluating that more than talking about how that technique functions. Both of these say they are "reviews" in the title - I don't really consider them critical analysis. We'll continue to explore what that means so you will get a better sense of it.

ReplyDeleteI found through while reading an analysis of this analysis
i give this article a 3/5 because there is very useful and helpful information in this site and article. But i personally think that the site might be a little poorly constructed and hard to find information. And i also cant find who wrote in this article but other than that this site was good.
DeleteI can't find information about the author and therefore wouldn't consider it a dependable source.
DeleteThe 'movie versus book' page had ALOT of information which is good.
But I struggle to find a thorough critical analysis.
This is certainly interesting, that someone took this immense amount of time to look at the use of numbers, etc, and what they feel are the secret meaning. I do not consider this good film analysis, though, because a huge portion of the very long blog post is repetitively telling us what they are going to be telling us about. It has a bit of the "flavor" of a conspiracy theorist rant - it feels like the author doth protest too much. I actually read a LOT of this blog and feel a bit cheated I didn't find out more. Plus it doesn't contain lot of analysis of technique, the points the author is making are mostly just pointing out patterns (though they sometime talks about an element like the color red). I suppose in way the author is giving their idea of how these patterns are functioning, but this isn't the kind of analysis that I am looking for with your work - where the functions tie more directly to the story, character and theme. I see where you are coming from with analysis - an interesting take for sure - but I wouldn't rate this as being very high in terms of concise and understandable writing. I do appreciate the author included pictures - that helps. Wow, this blog took a lot of time, more time than I have!

ReplyDeleteI like this site because the writer doesn't put in opinions and leave a question at the end.
DeleteI think it is a good review, but not a very great critical analysis. Sounds like a interesting film though. 2 out of 5.
DeleteI gave this piece a 6.5 out of 10, I enjoyed the hype and background information of the film but the critical analysis was not exactly there.
DeleteIt's a good synopsis I think .
DeleteThe word "review" is in the title so that's the first clue that this article is more of a review. It does give a good synopsis and some information about the filmmakers and seems to focus on the music. It does not, however, give any analysis of how elements are functioning. We'll keep exploring this so we all get a better handle on what this means.

ReplyDeleteAlthough most of the analyses on this website are quite short, they do a great job of discussing key moments and notable cinematic decisions while leaving out excessive opinionated remarks: http://filmref.com/index.html
ReplyDeleteIt would be more helpful if you linked up a specific article for us to look at. This site is a bit hard to navigate and though I only spent a few minutes I didn't really find a good solid piece of analysis that I could sink my teeth into. Obviously a lot of reflection on various art and artists, but seems more like journal entries and thoughts than real analysis. I might be missing something great but I can't find it.
Deletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/18/movies/her-directed-by-spike-jonze.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
ReplyDeleteI like this because it gives a thorough analysis of the movie 'Her'.
DeleteI say a 3 out of 5, while it did discuss the many ways the machine "samantha" was almost a character, I didn't think it had as many film techniques as it could have.
DeleteI give this a 7/10, because I feel as though it could provide a look into more cinematic technique, however it does provide a good analysis of the film.
DeleteThis is a great one (I believe), it is very true to the grit kind of analyses, which could be old fashioned, but yet very easy to be understand. MANOHLA DARGIS did a great job on reviewing "HER".
Delete8/10, I liked the mixture of background for the movie with some background for what it is all about and how it felt to be the critic viewing the movie. It gives a good conception of what the film is all about. cool.
DeleteI give this article a 6/10. Even though it goes over what worked and didn't about the film, it didn't have a thesis, so it wasn't really about anything making kinda boring to read.
DeleteI read specific analysis of the setting and how it was functioning, as well as exploration of some costume and acting choices. Still mostly a review, but definitely had some analysis.
Deletehttp://www.novelguide.com/reportessay/literature/novels/thematic-analysis-alfred-hitchcocks-psycho
ReplyDeleteI think this review is a 4 out of 5. I really like how the author was able to explain how Hitchcock used different techniques like the mirrors, camera angles, and specifically heights. The wording was very understandable and simple.
DeleteI rate this blog finding a 9/10. This blog analyzes the film's emotional affects as well as grasping and further explaining the plot line found throughout Psycho, which is what depicts the found blog as an analysis rather than a review.
DeleteI rate this a 9/10. The way it was written didn't seem to give away anything about the movie that would spoil it for you, but at the same time the author was able to convey exactly what you would be feeling if you were to watch this movie.
Delete9/10, The movie's feeling and conception is greatly reported on without giving away a lot about the film. It's the type of review/ analysis that really sells how good the movie is without ruining any of the key plot elements for the viewer.
DeleteI can know why Hitchcock's movie is scared and how can he make it .It's good I think .
DeleteThis article is definitely 10, a full-bodied Critical Analysis. The main thesis of the article is the idea that Hitchcock enables his audience to become characters in the plot through sympathizing with the actual characters. In great depth, it discusses the various tricks Hitchcock used in order to pull the audience into the story. It is especially important for the audience to feel emotionally attached while watching the film since Psycho is in the "horror" genre.
DeleteI give this article a 9/10. The thesis statement is the second sentence, so you clearly understand what the article is about right from the get go. Even though, the lack of paragraphs makes it hard to follow.
DeleteThis is definitely analysis - exploring specific cinematic elements and how they are functioning!

Let's keep talking about what "critical analysis" means and what kinds of writing is doing good written film analysis.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.vulture.com/m/2013/11/movie-review-the-great-beauty.html
ReplyDeleteI give this a 5 out of 5. Because i can't really find anything wrong with this site. Since the authors listed and the information in the article seems to be correct and factual, plus i searched the writer and he seems pretty accredible.
DeleteI think this is a 9/10. It has a thesis that is clear and easy to find. I don't think there is anything about the film technique, but it talks about the content and how that works.
DeleteTechnically this is a review, but the author definitely is exploring the story elements of the film in an in depth manner. There really isn't much analysis of cinematic technique, though (cinematic elements like lighting, cinematography, use of color, editing, etc etc). It does touch on the use of spectacular imagery and brings up the music. So it's a better example from the "review" side of the spectrum, but still not pure critical analysis.

ReplyDeleteHello, here is the correct link to my analysis, Sorry for the mix up earlier!
I give this blog post a 6/10. I feel as though this blog reply covers a very great deal in regards to meeting the criteria for a film review, however, I don't feel as though it is a proper film analysis.
DeleteI don't like this because it just like comment a movie----the blog is not objective. Baceuse it just like a propaganda.
DeleteI give this a 6/10. For me it was a little long, and it contained almost entirely personal opinions.
DeleteThis article centers around the characters in Leon the Professional and how they are the most important element to making this action film stand above others. In my opinion, it is more of a review than a critical analysis, but I enjoyed it all the same. 5/10
DeleteThere is some exploration of story elements but for the most part everything is just the author's opinion, which he states again and again. I definitely will expect to see more critical analysis in your posts.
DeleteI give this comment a 4 out of 5. Because both of the links had very great articles and writing but for some of the articles there seem to be some opinions and statements from the writers then actual facts. But over all both are great resources.
ReplyDeleteFilm Analysis for The Shawshank Redemption:
ReplyDeletehttp://narrativefirst.com/articles/the-shawshank-analysis
The About Page:
http://narrativefirst.com/about -- shows that the author is dependable.
A seriously in-depth analysis of The Shawshank Redemption. The main thesis explores the many different reasons why this movie continues to be timeless. 10/10
DeleteThis link contains very detailed information about this film and I think that's a very good job because the author has considered this film from all sides
DeleteThis is a really solid example - while it's focusing mostly on analyzing the narrative components I did see mention of how some cinematic elements (like the helicopter shot) reflect and support those story moments. Good find!
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI looked at the first link. The author of the site is trusted and therefore it is a dependable source. But the content of the articles are more about the plot, with some opinionated comments. There isn't much exploration of the technical aspects and it seems more like a review.
ReplyDelete3/5
I think the second link is very interesting because you can know all information about movies all year and this site have very short information about each movie but so important information.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/may/19/great-gatsby-review-philip-french
ReplyDeleteThis is a review, and though there is some mention of acting style and some of the components of Mise-En-Scene it mostly focuses on giving an idea of the plot and the choices of the film vs the original novel. I wouldn't really call this critical analysis of cinematic technique.
Deletehttp://dramatica.com/analysis/reservoir-dogs
ReplyDeleteThis is really great story analysis (though I am not familiar with this particular story structure tool). The post is focusing all on content of the film and I don't see any analysis of cinematic elements and how they relate to the story (which makes sense - that's not what they are trying to do). Just know that in our critical studies classes we will also discuss cinematic elements along with story elements.
DeleteI had to dig a little - but the author for cinema autopsy definitely does some analysis in some of his writing. He has written for Senses of Cinema which is a great source of critical analysis - lots of good essays on that site.
